BREAKING NEWS: As reported, @eNCA has seen a provisional order to attach assets issued against more than 15 companies and individuals, including Ignatius Mothakati and Lungile "Malombo" Maseko. Sources indicate that the South African Revenue Service's (SARS) illicit economy unit conducted an investigation into the matter. SARS is currently seeking a payment of R77 million from Mthakati and has subsequently identified and listed assets and property belonging to him for Preservation. The allegations pertain to money laundering and tax evasion implicating Mthakati and a business official Aaron Mangoato contracted with Eskom. North-West University (NWU) has secured a major milestone in establishing the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine, after the Council on Higher Education (CHE) accredited its six-year MBChB programme. The programme will be offered at the Potchefstroom Campus, with the first students expected to begin in 2028. NWU is now pursuing professional accreditation from the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), with a visit planned for February 2027. The medical school will become South Africa’s 11th, aimed at helping address the country’s shortage of doctors and healthcare needs, particularly in underserved communities. The university still needs to finalise partnerships with the University of the Witwatersrand and the National Health Laboratory Service. The curriculum will emphasise clinical competence, ethics, compassion, justice, integrity and service, reflecting the values of its namesake, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Police in Riviersonderend WC seized drugs worth an estimated R11-million during a vehicle stop-and-search operation on the N2 on Tuesday night. Officers stopped a black Nissan Tiida at about 22:35 and found 87 packets of Mandrax tablets, 16 packets of uncut crystal meth and two blocks of cocaine in the boot. A 37-year-old foreign national man was arrested for possession of drugs and is expected to appear in the Caledon Magistrate’s Court.

WOMEN’S MONTH: SAPS SEARCHING FOR BOYFRIEND WHO STABBED GIRLFRIEND TO DEATH IN SOWETO BACKROOM @SAPoliceService As the South African Police Service (SAPS) observes #WomensMonth, it is intensifying its fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), including the tracing and apprehension of suspects wanted in connection with crimes against women, children and vulnerable groups. In this regard, the SAPS is calling on 27-year-old Simiso Silomo Phakathi to hand himself over to the nearest police station after his live-in girlfriend 37-year-old Jabulisile Josephina Tshabalala was found stabbed to death, in Orlando East, Soweto. Tshabalala was last seen alive on 7 August 2026. Her body was discovered on 13 August 2026 inside the backroom where she had been residing with the suspect. She had allegedly been stabbed to death and her body was found covered with blankets and clothes. A J50 warrant of arrest for murder has been issued against Phakathi. The SAPS is issuing a firm warning to the suspect: hand yourself over to the police at the nearest police station without delay. There is nowhere to hide, and police will continue pursuing every lead until you are brought before a court of law. The suspect is considered dangerous. Anyone who sees Phakathi or has information on his whereabouts is urged to immediately contact Warrant Officer Zwane on 082 455 8572 or report to the nearest police station. The SAPS also appeals to anyone who may have information that could assist investigators to come forward. Do not harbour or assist a wanted suspect. Information provided to the police could be critical in ensuring that justice is served. As the country marks Women’s Month, the SAPS reiterates that violence against women will not be tolerated. Those responsible for such heinous crimes will be pursued and brought before the courts to face the full might of the law.
