A judge of Ghanaian descent stood up for a principle as old as justice itself: people should not be stopped by the state simply because of how they look, how they speak, or the kind of work they do. In July 2026, U.S. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong ruled that federal immigration agents (ICE) could not stop and question people based on their apparent race or ethnicity, their accent, the language they speak, or the type of work they do or its location. Her decision recognised a simple truth: in a free society, the burden should not be on innocent people to prove they belong because they fit someone’s stereotype. The U.S. Court of Appeals declined to suspend her ruling. But the U.S. Supreme Court, by a conservative majority, lifted her order. Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s separate opinion argued that factors such as apparent ethnicity, limited English proficiency, and certain occupations could contribute to “reasonable suspicion” for immigration enforcement. The consequences are real. Several American citizens have been stopped and questioned because they looked or sounded as though they might be undocumented immigrants per Kavanaugh’s profiling. Judge Frimpong did her best to preserve the dignity and constitutional rights of people who do not look or sound the way ICE officers might expect an American to look or sound. The Supreme Court saw it differently. History often remembers those who stood for liberty even when they were overruled. Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong deserves to be remembered as one of them.

This is class. This is maturity. This is patriotism. 🇬🇭 Shatta Wale has genuinely impressed me with this. And, let’s not forget that when Shatta Fest UK had to be cancelled over crowd safety concerns, Stonebwoy was quick to publicly send him a message of solidarity. The real competition is out there, not between ourselves. The day one Ghanaian artiste truly breaks through globally on the scale of Davido or Burna Boy or beyond, the magnetic effect will lift the entire Ghanaian music industry and the many with global potential. It’s time to move beyond the parochial rivalry between these two great ambassadors of Ghanaian music. When they win, Ghana wins. Let them move forward together. 🇬🇭

One for both Ghana and Nigeria to keep an eye on. Khari Ranson, Arsenal’s highly rated young goalkeeper, is currently part of England’s youth setup. Born in England to a Ghanaian mother and a Nigerian father, he’s eligible to represent all three nations. I’ll be watching his development at Arsenal with keen interest. It will be fascinating to see which badge he eventually chooses to wear.

Africa must never underestimate the power it holds in world football. With 54 member associations, CAF is the second-largest voting bloc in FIFA. No one becomes FIFA President, or remains FIFA President for long, without Africa. That is massive political capital. Exercising it requires a combination of wisdom and ambition. The silence from CAF over the controversy surrounding Gianni Infantino’s now-abandoned plan to sell part of the commercial rights of the FIFA World Cup to private investors has been striking. The proposal triggered a major backlash, fuelled discussions about a leadership challenge and a possible vote of confidence. One can only assume that intense lobbying of Africa is underway. If so, this is precisely yet another moment for Africa to recognise its leverage and not to sell itself short. Rather than simply rallying behind an increasingly embattled FIFA President, Africa should be thinking strategically about the future leadership of world football. We have in Patrice Motsepe a man of global stature, unquestionable business credentials, proven leadership and an ambitious vision for African football. Never mind his public statements that he has no such ambition to replace his friend. If there is to be a grand bargain, it should be one that builds alliances with UEFA and other confederations around the possibility of an African leading FIFA for the first time. Unless, of course, CAF’s silence is tactical. I sincerely hope that is the case and not merely a sign of unquestioning support for a president whose position has become increasingly difficult to defend. Africa has the numbers, and the credibility and the opportunity in Motsepe. It cannot let this chance go. It may take a long time to find another candidate like Patrice.
