I don't think ppl in their 20s realize how you blink and all of a sudden you're 30. Our generation does everything 3-4 years later than ppl born in the 80s, but you hit kinda a raw feeling of realizing you're no longer in your 20s: To rattle off a list: 1) You realize your professional identity is extremely important at this point. You're not "entry level" anymore. You look at your graduating class and ppl are mid-level contributors and managers now. Or maybe someone opened a bar or restaurant. You're not just starting off anymore, you need to think if you actually advanced over the past several years. 2) Health is extremely important. Can hit quite dramatically. There's a huge bifurcation that starts if you work out a lot, run a lot, or still play sports. Have to eat the right food and how you drink has changed a lot. Drinking like a fish loses its appeal quite quickly. What's cool at 22 isn't necessarily cool at 30. One of the things I hear late 20s Founders say over and over again is they realize "shit I need to make sure I get x amount of sleep every night regardless of what's going on." I work a lot but I don't f around w/ my baseline amount of sleep anymore (6.5-7). 3) You get shellshocked to hear stuff like "I graduated in 2025" and you realize you're not talking to ppl who were freshmen when you were a senior anymore. There's now a dozen graduating classes of people behind you that are going out, ready to take on the world, and going thru the experiences you used to revel in. What's important is that you did all the 20s experiences in your 20s, it doesn't have to stop at 30 but you do start to feel that it's time to move on. I think aimless traveling is one thing in particular to pound out in your 20s; being aimless in your 30s is less of a vibe. 4) My tolerance for having my time wasted is near zero. No bouncing around any "will they, won't theys" - your dates are either progressing or they're not, your friends are either going on trips & doing stuff with you or they're not. Something is either working or it isn't. Inaction is a waste of time because the clock is ticking. 5) The next big scary number is 39 - because I know it's going to be the "holy shit I'm about to turn 40" year - and it's not the same type of inner dilemma as turning 30. For 99.5% of cases, you're either a parent, a MD/Director, own a house, or are about to, or you're not. you're closing in on 20 years since graduating high school and your hairline or hair color is probably done at this point. I think the above is what makes the inflection point of hitting 30 so scary, because the feeling in your 20s re: optionality and "I have time" isn't necessarily there - things are much more rigid and there actually is a clock now. One of the things I'm looking forward too though is @Jack_Raines opining on this process as well given he's nailed a lot of the elements re: navigating your 20s.

If we get extremely anti-AI, anti-business policies voted for in 2028, then much of the blame is on San Francisco IMO. How they conduct themselves, how they talk about the avg american, how they talk about what AI will do to ppl, etc.

It’s interesting being in my 40s after starting my career with high achievers. I have friends with $5MM+ stock portfolios that rent that are planning on retiring this year while I have friends with $5MM homes that if they lost their jobs they would have 1-2 years of runway before needing to work again. Friends that drank and smoked most of their 20s and 30s are now starting to have real health issues. Some friends are healthier now than they were in their 20s mostly due to diet and abstaining from alcohol. It’s interesting how the consumption choices are just now starting to show in a big way at this point in my life among my network. I know this shvt is obvious but it’s still interesting to observe.
