The grammar of the passive voice is preventing any genuine action against the perpetrators of these crimes . It is more concerned with diplomatic gestures toward the #UAE than with taking concrete action to stop the suffering of Sudanese civilians. El Obeid was besieged and attacked by the UAE-supported #RSF militia. Humanitarian workers detained in Darfur and Kordofan are being held by the RSF. Attacks on infrastructure, electricity stations, water dams, and other civilian facilities are being carried out by the RSF. The looting, rape, destruction, and killing of civilians in Khartoum, Gezira, and El Geneina were carried out by the RSF. The only thing that prevented the RSF from committing its genocide in El Fasher during its 18-month siege was the government forces, who also continued humanitarian airdrops when much of the world chose not to act. This language is not diplomacy. It is clear hostility and complicity aimed at obscuring reality. No amount of language can change that.

We don’t need more evidence of the fact that the #UAE is providing massive amounts of military, logistical, and financial assistance to the genocidal Rapid Support Forces (#RSF)—it is already overwhelming and undeniable. What we need is an explanation from the various international actors proclaiming a need to end #Sudan’s unfathomably destructive war as to why they refuse to call out the #UAE and its brutally authoritarian strongman, Mohamed bin #Zayed. The war would end if the RSF found itself without UAE support—and yet none of those actors claiming to wish for peace in Sudan will take the obvious step of naming the #Emirates (some will do so privately). Various strategic and economic alliances have prolonged this unconscionable silence—a silence whose daily costs are best measured in Sudanese lives and suffering. For all the complexity of the larger scene in Sudan, this fact is clear and unblinkable.
