On Aug 20/21, an ex-PM is brought from Adiala Jail for a thorough checkup… and boom: the machine installed in 2022 for CT Angiography is reported either dead or no one is around to run it. Islamabad is basically a "SMALL UNIT" . Yet basic service delivery is still broken under his watch. Smaller units aren’t the magic fix. Competence is. And our rulers keep proving they don’t have it.

What a heart-wrenching tragedy, probably the worst human tragedy in Islamabad since the Ojhri Camp disaster in 1988: Capital’s flagship hospital has machines which don’t function even when a jailed ex-PM is in for treatment under Supreme Court orders & now, in this case, on top of faulty wiring which apparently caused the fire, there’s no SOP for such emergencies in the Hospital whose doors were apparently locked, preventing escape, topped by tardy rescue response! They can’t fix the basics & then people of Pakistan have to suffer their tall talk of Reform & Restructuring of the State! Monumental Incompetence!

𝐀𝐧 𝐎𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 “𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬” 𝐍𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐛 Liaquat Ali Khan, despite leaving behind vast estates in Muzaffarnagar and Haryana (then East Punjab), never filed for the refugee compensation he was lawfully entitled to after the independence of Pakistan in 1947. Brigadier Noor Hussain, Quaid’s last ADC, recounted that on Eid in 1950, Governor-General Khawaja Nazimuddin hosted Liaquat, Ra’ana Liaquat, and Fatima Jinnah for lunch. During the meal, Ra’ana remarked that if anything happened to her husband, she and her sons would be homeless. Liaquat replied, “𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐠𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐝. 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐲 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞.” Within a year, he was martyred by an Afghan who was living under asylum in Pakistan. As he fell, Liaquat recited the Kalima and uttered his final words: “Allah Pakistan ko apni amaan main rakhay” – May God protect Pakistan. During his leadership, he has often been accused of aligning Pakistan with the West against the USSR, but this view ignores facts. The Soviet Union invited him to Moscow for August 15, 1949, which coincided with India’s independence day. Pakistan proposed alternative dates, and by late 1949, the visit remained unscheduled. Liaquat accepted US President Truman’s invitation and visited Washington in May 1950. The United States urged Pakistan to delay recognition of Communist China and to provide air bases for Cold War operations. Liaquat rejected both demands to safeguard Pakistan’s sovereignty. Despite American pressure, Pakistan under his leadership became one of the first non-communist states to recognize the People’s Republic of China. A diplomatic cipher from US Ambassador Warren Austin on October 12, 1951, reported that Liaquat had refused to join a Western alliance in the Middle East and stressed Kashmir as Pakistan’s foremost issue. Four days later, he was assassinated. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may we strive to build the Pakistan envisioned by our founding fathers.
