The increasing use of federal institutions to disrupt governance in opposition states in Nigeria is condemnable. As I said in my last newsletter, no government is above scrutiny but when institutions like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are utilised to witch hunt specific states or public office holders, it indicates that their investigations are selective and erodes public trust in these institutions. The “freezing” of an official state government account without due legal process goes beyond the powers vested in the EFCC by the laws of our land. And the timing of the action suggests that this is just another attempt by the federal government to unduly influence the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State. Federal institutions must remain faithful to their constitutional mandate by acting with fairness, professionalism and political neutrality at all times. We therefore call on all Nigerians, civil society organisations and the international community to remain vigilant. Democracy cannot thrive where our institutions are perceived as instruments of political intimidation. Protecting the independence and credibility of our institutions is essential to preserving public trust and safeguarding Nigeria's democracy. The rule of law must prevail over the rule of politics.

PRESS STATEMENT PDP WELCOMES COURT OF APPEAL JUDGMENT ON CANDIDATE IN OSUN ELECTIONS, TAKES CONSEQUENTIAL DECISION Our lawyers have informed us that earlier today, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has upheld the nomination of Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, @OfficialPDPNig for Osun State elections, as submitted by the Kabiru Turaki-led Peoples Democratic Party and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) @inecnigeria to immediately include the party's logo on the ballot for the elections to be held on Saturday August 15, 2026. The panel of the Court held that the party having duly conducted primaries which were monitored by INEC, and the name of the winner forwarded to the commission, there was no legal impediment to the participation of the candidate in the elections. Specifically, it held that the access code for nomination on the portal was a mere administrative formality which cannot override the statutory provision of forwarding names to the commission, which PDP had done. This judgment confirms the persistent bias and unceasing opposition by INEC against the legitimate leadership of our party, in favour of pretenders who are working for the ruling party. The primaries that produced our candidate was peaceful, transparent, and the result uncontested. It was duly monitored by INEC, but the Commission blatantly refused to recognise our candidate thereafter and withheld the codes for the upload of candidates from us. The party approached the court and today the Court of Appeal allowed the appeal by the Turaki-led PDP and directed INEC to include the party's logo on the ballot papers for the elections. Though justice has finally been done, in this case the grant of justice is akin to a denial as there is no opportunity for our candidate to undertake campaigns in preparation for the elections. This ugly situation would have been avoided had INEC chosen to act responsibly and not in the very partisan way that it did and continues to do. We reiterate our position that INEC is not a neutral umpire, but more of an interested party with the goal of achieving an uncontested or weakly contested elections by the opposition parties, in favour of the ruling party. To this end, faced with the unimaginable difficulty that this situation puts on us, the Interim National Working Committee has chosen not to throw its hands up in defeat, which would only align with APC's wicked playbook. As a true opposition party and in defence of multi-party democracy, and after exhaustive consultations with key stakeholders, the Committee has decided to support the candidature of Governor Ademola Adeleke @AAdeleke_01 of Accord Party for Saturday's governorship elections. Governor Adeleke is a former member of our party who left because of the state-engineered and funded leadership conflict in our party. We therefore ask all our members to vote for Governor Adeleke. We encourage them to go out on Saturday to vote, defend their votes and ensure that their votes count in the election. Nigerians must resist the shameful do or die disposition of the APC to win elections in places where they are not popular, against the clear wishes of the people. Elections must be a true reflection of the peoples' wish, freely expressed through the ballot. Anything short of that is robbery and must not be allowed to stand. Press Statement PDP Condoles Amaechi on Mother’s Demise The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has condoled with the Vice Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, over the death of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Amaechi. The message was conveyed during a condolence visit by the National Chairman of the Interim National Working Committee, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, who led members of the party’s leadership to the former governor’s Abuja residence. Turaki said, “Nothing prepares anybody for the loss of a parent, especially a mother. So we can only imagine the deep loss and grief that you and your family are going through. As a party on whose platform you served the good people of Rivers State as Speaker and later as Governor, we share in your grief and encourage you to be strong, knowing the certainty of death and its role as a window to immortality.” In his response, Amaechi expressed deep appreciation for the visit and the words of condolence. He recounted the many sacrifices that his parents, especially his mother, made in raising him and his siblings. While commending the Turaki-led PDP for its resilience and defence of multi-party democracy, he stressed that unity of the opposition is the only means by which the Tinubu administration can be voted out of office in the interest of the country and its citizens. He added that the opposition must continue to explore various ways of cooperating as the election approaches, else the incumbent will have a smooth ride back to power. Beyond Elections: Can Political Parties and Courts Save African Democracy? Yesterday, I had the privilege of leading a delegation of the Interim National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to Bauchi State for the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Democracy Dialogue. The lecture, themed “Beyond Elections: Can Political Parties and Courts Save African Democracy?”, provided an important opportunity to reflect on one of the most pressing questions facing our continent today: how do we ensure that democracy remains meaningful and resilient beyond the ballot box. The gathering brought together distinguished African statesmen, political leaders, legal scholars, and other stakeholders for a rich and thought-provoking exchange on the future of democratic governance. For me, the discussions reinforced a fundamental truth: democracy is much more than conducting periodic elections. It requires political parties that are internally democratic and committed to the people, courts that remain independent and courageous in upholding justice, and institutions strong enough to resist undue influence and protect democratic values. Political parties have a responsibility to deepen democratic culture, promote accountability, and provide credible leadership. At the same time, the judiciary must remain a trusted guardian of the Constitution, the rule of law, and the rights of citizens. I left the dialogue with renewed conviction that safeguarding democracy is a shared responsibility. It requires political leaders, the judiciary, civil society, citizens, and institutions to play their respective roles with integrity, courage, and a genuine commitment to the common good. I am grateful for the opportunity to listen, learn, and contribute to this important conversation.
