Several years ago, I was doing some research into a story about a Facebook AI experiment that was shut down in 2017 after the AI bots developed a “secret language” and started talking to each other in a way that humans couldn’t understand. This story has since taken a weird turn. At the time I was doing that research, I read literally every publicly available article and document about the experiment. I clearly remember specific details from some of these articles (and somewhere buried in my files, I have dozens of screenshots, at least), and at the time, it was reported that the experiment had been shut down because of fears of a rogue AI system or something like that emerging. But when I search for articles about it today, only a handful of the original articles are still indexed on Google. Most of the articles I read a few years ago are nowhere to be found. Even weirder, most of the original articles that were published in 2017 were “updated” in 2020 and 2021 to say that, actually, the secret language that the AI bots developed and deployed without human involvement was NOT the reason the experiment was shut down. Apparently it took 3-4 years to announce that? There have also been a handful of new articles published from 2020-2025 (so, 3-8 years after the fact) that attempt to characterize the original reporting as hysteria and “clickbait”. If the initial story wasn’t correct, why did it take YEARS for Facebook to say so? And why did so many articles get de-indexed on Google? I’ve never seen anything like this before.
