Another prison unrest. how many lives this time? This is the second major prison disturbance in a matter of weeks. It is no longer an isolated incident. It is the result of poor management, neglegence, and a prison system that is under immense strain. This is no longer about one isolated event. It is about poor management, a lack of leadership, and a prison system that has been allowed to deteriorate. Even today, the Department of Prisons continues without a permanently appointed Commissioner General, despite the crisis unfolding before us. why has this critical position still not been properly filled? Deploying more security may contain the situation for a day, but it will not fix the problem. Overcrowding, inadequate facilities, poor healthcare, and the lack of meaningful rehabilitation demand urgent attention. A prison sentence takes away a person’s liberty, not their dignity. The Government must stop firefighting and start fixing a prison system that is showing clear signs of institutional failure.

The Government should listen to the message. The Police must serve the State and the people, not become a political tool of any Government in power. The disturbing reports of WhatsApp, Facebook and Telegram networks allegedly being used to share intimate images without consent and exploit women, children and vulnerable individuals demand immediate action from the Government. We must also confront the growing use of politically motivated fake accounts and coordinated networks to harass, manipulate and target individuals online. Digital platforms cannot become a safe haven for criminals, abusers or those who weaponise them for political purposes. This is not a matter for warnings, excuses or victim-blaming. Where criminal networks are operating, they must be identified, investigated and dismantled. Victims must be protected, illegal content removed, digital evidence preserved and perpetrators prosecuted under the law. The Government already has the institutions and mechanisms to act. What is needed now is leadership, coordination and urgency. The Government must act decisively and transparently. A government’s responsibility is not to tell victims to “be more careful”; it is to ensure that criminals cannot exploit them with impunity. Protecting the dignity, safety and rights of every woman and child must come before politics. Justice must find the perpetrators, not blame the victims.
