It is alleged that on Wednesday, 26/08, at about 19:30, members of #SANDF were conducting routine patrol duties along the Limpopo River, next to the Groblersbrug Border Post, when they spotted a male suspect crossing the river from Botswana into South Africa. They allegedly confronted the suspect and requested his passport, which he failed to produce. Upon searching his bag, they discovered a live pangolin classified as a Specially Protected Wild Animal. The suspect failed to provide a satisfactory explanation about the origin and possession of the protected species. He was immediately apprehended and handed over to Tom Burke Border Policing. The 27-year-old male suspect, Tholego Gaebolae, a Botswana citizen, appeared before the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 28/08 and he was remanded in custody, and his case was postponed to 17/09 for a formal bail application and further police investigations. The operations, which were intelligence-driven and aimed at disrupting criminal activities while addressing illegal immigration and the trade in illicit goods, were conducted by the same police members following the operationalisation of information received. During the first operation at Ga-Hlahla Village, a 33-year-old male suspect was arrested for the unlawful possession of ammunition and dealing in dagga. Police confiscated six rounds of ammunition, comprising two R5 rifle rounds and four 9mm rounds, as well as dagga and other exhibits with an estimated value of R150 000. Three additional suspects, comprising two males and one female aged between 27 and 33, were arrested for alleged contravention of the Immigration Act relating to illegal immigration. The three suspects are nationals of Eswatini. In a separate operation conducted by the same members within the Seshego policing area, a 35-year-old foreign male was arrested for the possession and dealing in illicit cigarettes. Police recovered illicit cigarettes valued at R850. A 31yr-old male was also arrested for the possession and dealing in dagga and drugs. Police recovered undisclosed cash, dagga with an estimated value of R30 000, and other drugs estimated at R500. A white Volkswagen Polo sedan, with a GP registration number, believed to be linked to the offence, was also seized. The vehicle is estimated to be worth R90 000. Another 35yr-old male was arrested for police interference during the operation. All seven suspects were detained at Seshego Police Station, where the exhibits were handed over for further investigation. Information had been received about a group of suspects travelling from Eastern Cape towards Bloemfontein in two vehicles, truck and a VW Polo.
