The United States is delivering a range of supplies requested by the Government of Nepal and is working with Nepal to ensure that assistance reaches the people who need it. Today, Chargé d’Affaires Scott Urbom sent the first shipment of emergency supplies from the United States to Nepalis affected by the flooding. Catholic Relief Services, working through implementing partner Caritas Nepal, will deliver more than 2.5 metric tons of food supplies, 500 blankets, 500 mosquito nets, and 500 insulating foam sheets for temporary shelter flooring to two school locations in Rasuwa. U.S. Embassy Nepal is closely coordinating with the Government of Nepal, Catholic Relief Services, and Caritas Nepal to prepare and deliver subsequent shipments of supplies that match Nepal’s needs.

United States Expresses Condolences to the Victims of the Nepal Floods The United States extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the devastating flash floods in the Rasuwa district of Nepal. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this disaster. The State Department is closely monitoring the situation and is deploying a disaster response advisor to the region to support response efforts. To implement the Cultural Property Agreement signed between Nepal and the United States in January 2026, we are pleased to announce the United States has published import restrictions on archaeological and ethnological material from Nepal. These restrictions will help deter the removal and illegal transfer of cultural artifacts and materials that rightfully belong to Nepal. Yesterday, at a repatriation ceremony hosted by Nepal’s Department of Archaeology, two sacred treasures returned home: a 13th-century gilt bronze Padmapani and a 16th-century polychromed wooden Nrityadevi. The United States is proud to partner with Nepal in the return of these significant cultural artifacts, reflecting years of close cooperation to combat the illicit trafficking of cultural property and restore sacred objects to the communities where they belong. The newly enacted U.S.-Nepal Cultural Property Agreement builds on this longstanding partnership and provides a stronger framework for future collaboration, including joint efforts to support investigations, prevent trafficking, and safeguard Nepal’s rich cultural heritage. “To date, 127 Nepali antiquities have been returned from the United States to their rightful homes in Nepal,” said Public Affairs Chief Mike Harker. “With the return of these two sacred statues, that record of cooperation grows stronger and demonstrates how criminal investigations, diplomatic coordination, and community advocacy can work together to disrupt antiquities trafficking networks. The new U.S.-Nepal Cultural Property Agreement gives our two countries an even stronger foundation to build on this work, support future investigations, and help prevent Nepal’s sacred heritage from entering the illicit market.” The United States congratulates the Government and people of Nepal on this important milestone and remains committed to working alongside Nepal to protect cultural heritage, uphold the rule of law, and preserve the country’s remarkable history for future generations.

Rasuwa Flooding and Major Road Closures Location: Rasuwa District and communities along the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli, and Narayani river corridors. Event: On August 26, a catastrophic flash flood and debris flow struck Rasuwagadhi, Timure, Syafrubesi, and downstream communities. The flood destroyed roads, bridges, buildings, electricity infrastructure, and communications networks. Nepali authorities continue search-and-rescue operations. The main flood surge has moved downstream. Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology currently reports no indication of another major destructive flood. However, continuing rainfall may raise river levels and trigger local flooding, landslides, debris flows, and additional road damage. Stay away from riverbanks, low-lying areas, and damaged infrastructure. The August 26 flood did not pass through Kathmandu Valley. Tribhuvan International Airport remains open and is handling domestic and international flights. Confirm your flight directly with your airline before traveling to the airport. Road Closures: As of 10:00 a.m. on August 27, Nepali authorities reported the following major closures: · Authorities have prohibited traffic between Nagdhunga and Mugling. · The Mugling–Narayanghat road is closed. · All highways in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts are blocked. · The Trishuli–Mailung–Syafrubesi road is blocked. · Multiple sections of the Prithvi Highway in Dhading are blocked. · The Araniko Highway is blocked near Bhotekoshi and Liping. These closures block the normal overland routes from Kathmandu toward Rasuwa, Pokhara, Chitwan, Langtang, and the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border crossing. Authorities have also imposed nighttime restrictions on portions of the BP Highway, Kanti Lokpath, and Tokha–Chhahare road. Do not attempt to bypass roadblocks or use restricted roads as alternate routes. Actions to Take: · Postpone non-essential overland travel from Kathmandu toward Rasuwa, Pokhara, Chitwan, or the Tibet border until authorities reopen the roads. · Do not travel to Rasuwa District, including Langtang, Gosaikunda, the Tamang Heritage Trail, Syafrubesi, Timure, or Rasuwagadhi, until authorities and your travel operator confirm safe access. · Stay away from riverbanks, low-lying areas, damaged bridges, landslides, and flood debris. · Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. · Follow road closures, evacuation orders, and other instructions from Nepali authorities. · Confirm road, trail, border-crossing, and flight status immediately before traveling. · If you are safe, contact your family, hotel, guide, and tour or trekking company.
