A typical post picks up 296 interactions against 324K followers, an engagement rate of 0.091%. Measured over 17 original posts, its engagement rate beats 69% of 21,874 tracked accounts of a similar size, which puts it in the middle of its size range rather than at either end. Posts are seen about 23K times each, and 1.26% of those impressions turn into an interaction. That is about 7.25% of the follower count, which is the gap between an audience on paper and an audience in a timeline. Posting runs at about 0.63 post a day over the last 30 days, though only 33% of days saw any activity at all. Most posts go out around 09:00 UTC, and Friday is the busiest day of the week. Of the 17 posts sampled, 6% carry an image or video and 100% link out. The account's strongest tracked post pulled 2.4K interactions, about 8.2x its own typical post.

Compared with accounts its own size

USGS Earthquakes's engagement rate beats 69% of the tracked X accounts closest to it in follower count (21,874 accounts, accounts of similar size (decile 10 of 10)). A percentile is spread evenly by construction, so 50 really is the middle of that group and 90 really is its top tenth.

On engagement per impression rather than per follower it beats 53% of the same group. When those two numbers disagree, the gap is about how far its posts travel rather than how people react to them.

Where this sits in the catalog

At 0.091%, USGS Earthquakes sits above the 25th percentile of the 218,920 accounts in this comparison. That places it in the below the median band, which runs 0.025% to 0.149%.

Engagement rate as a share of followers, across the 218,920 accounts we have scanned enough to measure. The axis is logarithmic, because the top and bottom of this population are about 21,716 times apart and a linear axis would flatten everything below the median into a single point.

This account posts most often around 09:00 UTC, and Friday is its busiest day of the week. The bars below are the catalog-wide pattern, with this account's own busiest slot marked. They do not show how this account performs at each hour: we keep one aggregate per account, not one per hour, so that measurement does not exist in our data.

Formats this account uses

Its own posting mix on the left, and what each of those formats does across every account we track on the right. Only formats where the effect clears our publish test appear here, so an empty row is a format we could not measure rather than one that does nothing.

  • 6% of this account's sampled posts carry an image or video. Across the catalog, posts with an image or video run 111% above the same accounts' other posts.
  • 100% of its posts carry a link off X. Across the catalog, posts with an outbound link run 41% below the same accounts' other posts, so a large share of this account's output sits in the weakest bucket we measure.
  • Its average post runs 163 characters, which falls in the 80 - 180 characters band. Across the catalog, posts of 80 to 180 characters run 3% below the same accounts' other posts.

These are catalog-wide differences applied to this account's own posting mix, not a measurement of how each format performs for this account specifically. We keep one median per account, not one per format per account, so the second thing is not something this data can tell you.

This morning's magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Colombia caused strong shaking across western Columbia. An estimated 1.5 million people experienced shaking near intensity 7, strong enough to cause damage to unreinforced masonry buildings especially. The earthquake occurred at a depth of ~100 km, within the slab of old seafloor sinking beneath the South American continent. These so-called intermediate depth, interslab earthquakes are less dangerous than shallow earthquakes of the same magnitude because the fault break is farther from the earth's surface. But these faults also break in a way that releases energy at frequencies that are damaging to buildings. Intermediate depth earthquakes tend to have fewer aftershocks than more shallow quakes, but strong aftershocks are possible and pose a continuing hazard during rescue and recovery. The ShakeMap for yesterday's magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Colombia has been revised with the analysis of additional data, including eyewitness reports contributed to the USGS Did You Feel It? system. The earthquake did generate stronger shaking than average for the magnitude and location. The USGS estimates that over 6 million people were exposed to intensity 7 to 8 shaking. Towns east of the epicenter, including Pereira, Manizales, and Armenia experienced severe shaking. Our hearts are with the people of Colombia as rescue and recovery operations continue. "A Tale of Two Earthquakes" Our hearts go out to those affected by the tragic M6.8 Uto earthquake, which struck southern Japan on July 28, 2026. The earthquake caused widespread damage and a death toll now standing at 35. With its on-land location and locally severe shaking, the earthquake reminds us that moderately large earthquakes, also including the 1994 M6.7 Northridge, California, earthquake, pose a significant hazard in earthquake-prone regions especially. If you feel strong shaking in any location, drop, cover, and hold on. For more information about recent quakes, see https://t.co/QOeRZbmKoZ [Maps show USGS ShakeMaps for 1994 Northridge and 2026 Uto earthquakes.]

Reading these numbers

What is USGS Earthquakes's engagement rate on X?
USGS Earthquakes (@USGS_Quakes) has an engagement rate of 0.091%, based on the median interactions across 17 original posts from the last 30 days against 323,601 followers. Replies, reposts and quote-posts of other people are excluded from that sample.
Is that a good engagement rate?
At 0.091%, USGS Earthquakes sits above the 25th percentile of the 218,920 accounts in this comparison. Those comparison accounts are all large ones, because our scanning cadence is weighted towards big accounts, so this is a ranking among peers of similar scale rather than a ranking across X.
Does @USGS_Quakes have real engagement?
Its engagement rate beats 69% of the tracked X accounts closest to it in follower count (21,874 accounts), which puts it in the middle of its size range group. Ranking inside a size band matters because engagement rate falls as accounts grow, so a raw rate would mostly re-measure the follower count. It is a starting point for a look at follower quality, not a verdict on it.
When does @USGS_Quakes post?
Most posts go out around 09:00 UTC, and Friday is its busiest day, at roughly 0.63 posts per day across the measured window.
