Outraged. Horrified. Shocked. Appalled. Heartbroken. It’s hard to find just one word to express my feelings about the assassination of MN Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. One of the first roles Melissa ever took in politics was working for me in the U.S. Senate. Though she was only there for a short time, she had a lasting impact on our team. I can tell that the same is true of the many others who worked with her throughout her impactful career as a public servant and leading climate advocate. There is absolutely no excuse for political violence and everyone in public life must condemn this horrific tragedy. My prayers go out to her children and all who loved her. I am also praying, along with so many others, for the full recovery of MN Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

The Trump Administration is once again trying to deny science and reality – this time, by throwing out the well-established research connecting the climate crisis to public health. While the Trump Administration can try to ignore the climate crisis, it’s painfully clear that the climate crisis will not ignore us. Last summer, the US experienced a dozen once-in-1,000-year floods in the span of just three days. In Texas, one of those flooding events killed at least 135 people, including 37 children at summer camp. The Trump Administration’s rollback of the endangerment finding is not only a direct assault on science, knowledge, and public health, it is an insult to the people across the country who are already coping with the disastrous consequences of climate-driven extreme weather events. The decision to revoke the endangerment finding is one of the more egregious examples of the Trump Administration prioritizing fossil fuel profits over American lives.

Losing Rob and Michele Reiner is truly heartbreaking. They were loyal friends and among the kindest people I have ever met. Rob made an indelible impact on American entertainment, but what stands out most to me is how he and Michele worked together to champion democracy, LGBTQ+ rights, and, above all, empathy and compassion. I am thinking of everyone who is feeling this loss so deeply today.

Today’s EPA announcement ignores the blindingly obvious reality of the climate crisis and sidelines the EPA’s own scientists and lawyers in favor of the interests and profits of the fossil fuel industry. Weakening safeguards that reduce greenhouse gas pollution will harm American competitiveness in a global economy that is moving away from oil, gas, and coal and will increase the suffering of communities that are overburdened by the dirty co-pollutants caused by burning fossil fuels.

In its first week, the new administration has taken many steps to roll back climate progress. One I want to draw extra attention to is the repeal of an environmental justice Executive Order I was proud to champion in the Clinton-Gore White House. The video below shows a day's worth of harmful particulate pollution flowing into a part of America known as "Cancer Alley." 66.9% of residents of Cancer Alley are Black. The poverty rate is nearly 50% higher in Cancer Alley than in the country as a whole. It is one of the most heavily polluted areas in the United States and the town of Reserve, Louisiana has the highest cancer risk in the U.S., at 50 times the national average. Decades of discriminatory practices have turned low-income communities and communities of color across the country into dumping grounds for pollution. Environmental justice isn't part of some imaginary "woke agenda." The Executive Order that was repealed last week focused on ending discrimination, not perpetuating it. This is a disappointing setback for those who seek to put an end to this longstanding injustice. But environmental justice advocates are among the most active and effective voices in the global grassroots movement for environmental protection and climate action. I look forward to continuing to lock arms with them in our struggle for a cleaner future.

The Trump Administration is attempting to silence climate scientists and sideline climate science. But the American people are facing the rapidly worsening reality of the climate crisis – from deadly tornadoes and monster hurricanes to giant “rain bombs” and massive floods to devastating droughts and apocalyptic fires. Dismantling the National Climate Assessment doesn’t make America great – it is reckless and leaves us unprepared for the impacts of the climate crisis that continue to grow more severe.

All of us as Americans must condemn the horrific murder of Charlie Kirk in the strongest terms possible! In our nation, acts of political violence are attacks on democracy itself. I urge all Americans to join in a commitment to help steer our democracy away from the hatred and hyper-partisan divisions that have become all too common, and steer instead toward open, good faith debate among those with whom we disagree. My prayers are with the Kirk family.

Pope Francis will be remembered forever as the People’s Pope. He was a tireless champion for climate action because of his unwavering conviction that to truly care for one another and protect the most vulnerable among us, we must halt the destruction of God’s creation. His humble leadership on the climate crisis sparked a moral movement that will continue to light the way forward for humanity. His advocacy of social and economic justice inspired billions around the world. I am grateful to have known and worked with him. May God grant him eternal rest in heaven.
