We have got to do a better job of teaching QBs to see the defense!!! Too much looking at WRs to see if they are open, instead of letting the defense tell us if they’re open! #DrivingMeCrazy

I fully understand how the NFL works but the more preseason I watch the more I would love for someone who’s knows QB to truly evaluate higher drafted guys vs others! I am continually amazed at the # of chances some guys get after showing they struggle to see the game and play the position! The lack of true understanding & vision at backup positions is startling when u get to see it & yet the vet (who’s bounced around) will get every opportunity over a young guy that hasn’t had that opportunity yet! I’m not saying guys can’t grow and get better, no better case than #SamDarnold a year ago, but when I pop on the tape and see exactly what I’ve always seen from these guys it makes me scratch my head trying to figure out what I’m/they are missing? When I was a rookie #DickVermeil had to make a similar dec for his 3rd QB - an older journey man or a young kid that “may” be good - he chose me & gave me that shot… just don’t understand why more teams don’t? Shoot me your thoughts?

I hate that too often at the highest level it’s not “the best player plays”!! I have competed my whole life and always thought this is what sports was about, all I ever wanted… then to get to the highest level of sport and watch other factors dictate who plays, way too often, just seems wrong!

I heard @danorlovsky7 mention today how a route that the @Raiders were throwing adjusted from 5 yards vs OFF coverage, to 8 yards vs press coverage… I want u all to know how difficult that is for a QB! I NEVER had a route that did that in all my time playing football, would love to know the WHY behind it! Is the benefit greater than the risk of miscommunication - that’s the first question I would ask! Trying to see and determine all that in the matter of a 3 step drop (would be easier with longer drop) is very difficult! To see it pre-snap, then verify post snap while tying in footwork and weight distribution (and anything else that might be a possibility on that play) is really tough!

Reflecting on the @ProFootballHOF weekend & thinking how I studied, admired & appreciated all the QBs that own a #GoldJacket, but my fav to pop on the tape & watch, @drewbrees! A big part bc he played the game so similar to me & that made me so appreciate his gifts! I felt we were the two best in NFL history at: 1) processing AFTER the snap (Peyton the best BEFORE) 2) Accuracy 3 Anticipation Those things that don’t show up in arm strength or athletic ability, in things you can “measure”, but are way more important for guys like us! I count myself blessed to have watched his career up close and to have had some opps to compete against one the greatest to ever do it!

Things that are crazy to me when listening to ppl “rave” about NFL QB play: 1) When an NFL QB completes a pass to their open 1st read (this should be the norm for anyone playing in NFL)… yes, it shows they are doing what they are supposed to do, which is good, but not a true sign of how good a QB is, that for me starts when they actually have to think the game! 2) When a QB misses reads right in front of him, but then salvages the play by running around… yes, it’s great that they salvaged the play, but not a world you can thrive in, in the NFL, so frustrates me more than excites me! Good QB to me is: CONSISTENTLY making right read & throw (when 1st read is open), the ability to quickly go beyond #1 & find right throw (when #1 is not open), to recognize different scenarios of defense (changing coverages, blitzing, specific drop of players, etc) & make the right decision based off it, the majority of the time!

Another example of a CHOICE route messing up a QBs feet so he has to try and play “catch-up” & creates a bad throw and a turnover!!! When you don’t define the read for QB & WR these things happen! I would rather eliminate a POSSIBLE big play for consistency and completions, but that’s just me!!

I read a book recently where it talked about being able to tell a lot about a person at a 4-way stop… the more I thought about it, the more I agreed! Then, the more I watch ppl deplaning an airplane, the more I think the same things apply! Thoughts?
