TODAY, on August 17th, I celebrate 23 years clean and sober.🙏 I am filled with gratitude forgetting a second chance at life, after pulling myself out of the grips of addiction, one day at a time. I've spoken out about it openly here on Twitter, in the spirit of wanting to help destigmatize addiction... it doesn't matter what political party you belong to, what race or religion. Small-minded and pathetic lowlifes have tried repeatedly to attack me using lies about my own shared anecdotes, and all I can do is remind them "There, but for the grace of God go I." Addiction can happen to anyone. And it destroys lives and families. If you know someone struggling with it, there is hope. 23 years ago, I admitted that I needed help, that I could NOT do it on my own, and surrendered to my higher power. But that was only after MANY attempts to stop had failed; three years here, four years there... I was beginning to feel hopeless. Nothing beats a failure except a try. It has been a LONG journey, often a daily struggle, and I look forward to (hopefully) 23 more years and beyond of sobriety. I STRONGLY believe in therapy in addition to the 12 Step programs of AA and NA, because that support system is invaluable. Not just for the addict, but Al-Anon helps the families dealing with it too. There are MANY of you out there who have reached out and been supportive of me over the years. Know that I love and appreciate you, because this really ain't easy, even after 23 years. One day at a time.
