Itās ridiculous that we even have not guilty by reason of insanity as a verdict option in a murder trial. Most murderers are insane definitionally on some level. Why should society care? The juryās options should be: You did it and you meant to You did it but you didnāt mean to (manslaughter) You did it, but it was justified (self-defense etc) You didnāt do it. Not guilty by reason of insanity seems like the outgrowth of a society thatās looking for excuses not to punish criminals.

Iām hearing from a troubling number of Florida Republicans who say they would vote for David Jolly over Byron Donalds. Their theory goes something like this: A Republican legislature would rubber-stamp whatever Byron wants (even bad policies) but would stonewall Jolly. So, they argue, four years of a Democrat might ācleanseā the Florida GOP and produce a better Republican nominee in 2030. Do not buy this argument. It focuses almost entirely on legislation. The Florida Legislature meets for just 60 days a year. Meanwhile, the governor exercises enormous executive power year-roundāincluding appointments, agency leadership, emergency authority, and judicial selections. Floridaās response to COVID happened because Ron DeSantis was governor, not because the Republican legislature led the way. Why would we voluntarily give Democrats even the slightest foothold after 8 years of making Florida the strongest red state in America? I donāt want Democrats winning Florida House seats, much less the governorās mansion. A Democrat governorās appointments and judicial selections could shape Florida long after a four-year term ends. You donāt surrender lasting institutional power just to teach your own party a lesson. This assumes the Florida GOP would even nominate someone better in 2030. Didnāt we also assume Republicans would produce a stronger successor to DeSantis in 2026? How did that work out? Iām not betting Floridaās future on the hope that the party suddenly improves four years from now. And if Byron governs badly, nothing prevents a stronger conservative from challenging him in 2030. You donāt ācleanseā the GOP by handing Florida to the radical Left. You punish every Floridian and give Democrats the power to entrench themselves. Donāt be stupid, Florida. Do not support David Jolly. He isnāt even pretending to be a moderate. Heās running as a full-blown left-wing radical.
